complement (v.) to complete, make perfect
I guess that’s why they’re called complementary colors. Even if red & green, orange & blue, yellow & purple turn brown when they are mixed together (as paints, because that’s how subtractive coloring works), they are even more vibrant when put side-by-side.
It’s just so perfect, the meaning of words.
